Dear Readers,

Issue 5 of ERD News travels to Florence to find out about the ‘zero draft’ of the forthcoming second edition of the European Report on Development (ERD 2010/2011), looks back on an eventful few months and looks forward towards the ever-nearing launch of the report which will take place in Brussels on 7 December 2010 in the context of the European Development Days.

A social safety net for Africa

Leading figures from the European, African and international development community gathered in Florence on 17 September 2010 to discuss the ERD’s zero draft. The meeting – which coincided with the UN summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – explored what role social protection can play in combating poverty and vulnerability and in promoting growth and social inclusion in sub-Saharan Africa. Podcast: Social protection and the Millennium Development Goals

This is the second podcast related to the 2010/2011 edition of the European Report on Development. Ahead of the ‘UN summit’ on the Millennium Development Goals in September, 70 leading academics, development professionals, civil society representatives and policy-makers from Europe, Africa, other donor countries and international agencies gathered in Florence to discuss whether social protection can help reduce poverty and vulnerability in Africa and promote pro-poor growth.
