Mobilising European research for development policies
The expertise of European research centres and academic institutions contributing to development related issues has been linked since 2007 to policy-making processes at European level through the launch of a joint initiative on “Mobilising European research for development policies”. This initiative involves the European Commission as well several EU Member States (namely Germany, France, Finland, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom).
On the bases of knowledge excellence and innovation, it enhances European perspective on development issues in the international arena and builds a common ground between the European research community and policymakers.
The annual European Report on Development represents the main outcome of this process, collecting a research-led and forward-looking review of development issues.
The research team composed by François Bourguignon, Agnès Bénassy-Quéré, Stefan Dercon, Antonio Estache, Jan Willem Gunning, Ravi Kanbur, Stephan Klasen, Simon Maxwell, Jean-Philippe Platteau and Amedeo Spadaro produced a background paper for the ERD 2009 on “Millennium Development Goals at Midpoint: Where Do We Stand and Where Do We Need to Go?” which informed the choice to focus the first edition of the ERD on development policies in a situation of fragility.
